The P90X Prep & Fit Test

Well, I have begun my second round of P90X!

I can’t believe it has been nine and a half months since I completed my first round of P90X. I had never intended to stop for this long… but sometimes life gets in the way.

Regardless, the time has come! I’m going to be doing things a little differently than I did the first time… but I’ll save that for another post, because…

It’s time for the P90X Prep and Fit Test!

The P90X Fitness Guide describes the P90X Prep as “things to do before you start the program”. There are 5 steps to the P90X Prep, which I will take in order:

Step 1: Watch the How to Bring It video.

The video begins with Tony explaining the concept of muscle confusion and laying out the three standard ways of going through the program: Classic, Doubles, & Lean (I won’t be following any of these). It goes into some detail about the P90X diet (I also won’t be following the diet). It also covers supplements (I will be using these… in fact I have been stocking up on supplements for the past nine months) and equipment (I already have everything I need). The Team Beachbody support system is also introduced. Finally, the Fit Test and performance tracking are covered.

The How to Bring It video runs about 15 minutes and is a good introduction to the P90X program.

Step 2: Record your measurements and take “before” photos.

I have a fancy Ironman scale which gives some fancy figures that are not standard P90X measurements… but I have the fancy scale, so I though I’d include the fancy measurements. I also have a not-so-fancy tape measure that I used for some of the not-so-fancy measurements.

Here’s my measurements:

  • Body Fat: 11.2%
  • Weight: 152.2 lbs.
  • Water: 63.6%
  • Muscle: 128.4 lbs.
  • BMR: 1778 cal.
  • Bone: 6.8 lbs.
  • Chest: 38″ (around nipples)
  • Waist: 32″ (around belly button)
  • Hips: 36″ (widest part)
  • Thighs: 19″ (midpoint)
  • Arms: 12.5″ (peak of bicep)

I’m happy to see that it looks as though I have retained some of the muscle I gained during my first round of P90X.

Here are my measurements from my first round:

  • Test: Day 0 / Day 90
  • Body Fat %: 11% / 8%
  • Weight: 153 lbs. / 160 lbs.
  • Chest: 37” / 41”
  • Waist: 32” / 32”
  • Hips: 35” / 38.5”
  • Thighs: 18” / 21”
  • Arms: 12” / 14”

For my “before” photos, I used a regular Canon PowerShot A520 digital camera propped up on a table. I edited them a bit with iPhoto before uploading them to the blog.

Here are my “before” photos:

(I know… I know… “Get some sun!”)

If you want to take a look at my “before” and “after” photos from my first round with P90X, check out my Team Beachbody Gallery: CoachJames.name/gallery.

Step 3: Take the Fit Test — are you ready for P90X?

The P90X Fit Test is meant to insure that you are physically ready for the P90X Program. It also provides a great opportunity to set some benchmarks for yourself so that you can see how much your fitness has increased upon finishing the 90 days.

I’ll include my numbers here, but if you really want to get a good idea of what the P90X Fit Test is all about, be sure to check out the video below.

Here are my numbers:

  • Resting Heart Rate: 52 bpm
  • Pull-Ups: 4.5 reps
  • Vertical: 22″
  • Push-Ups: 22 reps
  • Toe Touch: +7”
  • Wall Squat (min): 2:30
  • Bicep Curls: 10 @ 25 lbs
  • In & Outs: 60

Once again, it looks as though I retained some of the strength I gained 9 months ago after my first round of P90X.

Here are my numbers from my first round:

  • Test: Day 0 / Day 90
  • Resting Heart Rate: 53 bpm / 50 bpm
  • Pull-Ups: 5 / 12.5
  • Vertical: 21” / 26”
  • Push-Ups: 18 / 44
  • Toe Touch: +5” / +10”
  • Wall Squat (min): 2:00 / 5:00
  • Bicep Curls: 45 (orange) / 16 (25 lbs)
  • In & Outs: 50 / 100

Now… it’s time for our feature presentation! I made the following with iMovie… Enjoy!

You can download the .m4v file (Quicktime & iTunes) here: The P90X Fit Test. (Right click, “Save Target As…”.)

(This is like the first “movie” I have ever made!… What do you think?)

Step 4: Get your kitchen in order.

I completed a two day fast with the Beachbody 2-Day Fast Formula this morning. I had never done a “powder” fast before, so this was interesting for me. I’ll post a complete review of my fast and the 2-Day Fast Formula in a future post. For now, let me just say that it was a great way to “reset” my digestive system before starting my second round of P90X.

In terms of “getting your kitchen in order”, I just returned from Whole Foods, where I purchased a bunch of lean meat, fruit, and sprouted grains. This food, combined with the veggies growing in the garden, and the supplements I’ve been stocking up on, will provide me with the fuel I need to power my body through the start of my second round of P90X.

Step 5: Go to the Team Beachbody Message Boards for support.

Team Beachbody is all about the support, and the message boards is a great place to get it.

I just returned from the message boards, where I uploaded my latest pictures to my gallery.

After my pictures are approved, I’ll head back to the message boards to let everyone there know that I have started my second round of P90X and see what they are up to.

There you have it… P90X Prep & Fit Test complete!!!

Tomorrow… I BRING IT!!!

    Hey Jim,

I liked the movie, especially all the Boston sports gear. the 21.CR.INFO graphic at the end looked very Hollywood, I’m impressed.

    Thanks Dan.

Yeah, I really like the graphic at the end too! (I’ve watched it a few too many times… it makes me happy.)

The whole thing was so easy to do too!
